Old Stories For A New World

We experienced another year. 2020 gave us the opportunity to take a step way back and sit in our discomfort. To reprioritize. To see where and how we went wrong. And to course-correct.

We don't know what 2021 will hold. The uncertainty is real and it is big.

Nothing we as a culture have built in recent years will help guide us to where we're going. We need a different map and different tools. Not new ones, but old ones. Ancient, even. We will need to stay connected to the heart and the breath during the twists and turns of this journey. And we will need to embody all of our knowledge, power, and capacity as we recreate the world in this new era.

For 52 weeks, story- myth- will be our map, our guide, and our tool kit. We will ground ourselves in the tales of heroes past and see our own heroism reflected. We will chant their names. We will meditate on their wisdom. We will take their shape, challenging ourselves to go ever deeper into our human experience.

"Myths are the journey. Home is the heart. It's a long journey home". -Dr. Douglas Brooks

A few words about myths and the framework I learned from Douglas-

  • A myth is a self conscious lie told in service of a greater truth.

  • Every myth has missing, extra, and broken pieces.

  • You are every character in every story.
